Finding Fireflies in the Darkness

Finding the Fireflies in The Darkness

Sometimes We All Need Someone to Talk To

As a chiropractor, I've seen firsthand how stress often shows up physically—in our muscles, our posture, our sleep, and even how we experience pain. Caring for your mind is every bit as important as caring for your body.

In that vein, I recently started reading Maybe You Should Talk to Someone by Lori Gottlieb, and I'm really enjoying it.

One passage especially stood out to me:

"It's not as if we're going to peer in those darker corners, flip on the light, and find a bunch of cockroaches. Fireflies love the dark too. There's beauty in those places. But we have to look in there to see it."

What a beautiful reminder.

I sincerely hope we continue to remove the stigma surrounding mental health. Life has a way of becoming overwhelming. Between work, family, relationships, unexpected challenges, and the constant noise of the world, it's easy to feel like we're carrying more than we were ever meant to carry alone.

The truth is, we all need people.

Over the years, I've met with counselors and therapists on several occasions. Not because I was "broken" or "crazy," but because I wanted to grow. I wanted to become a better husband, father, doctor, friend, and person.

Just as an athlete benefits from a coach, sometimes we all benefit from someone who can help us see what we can't see ourselves.

There are seasons in life when we need a trusted guide to help us navigate uncertainty, heal old wounds, or simply gain a healthier perspective. Asking for help isn't a sign of weakness—it can be one of the strongest decisions we ever make.

If you're feeling overwhelmed, anxious, discouraged, or simply stuck, please don't suffer in silence. There are compassionate professionals who genuinely want to help you find hope, clarity, and yes—even those fireflies hidden in the darkness.

You are not alone.

And remember, counseling isn't only for difficult seasons. Sometimes it's simply a place to explore your dreams, clarify your purpose, and make sure your ambitions are serving your life instead of consuming it.

You are loved.

You matter.

The world is better with you in it.

If you're looking for more encouragement about living with purpose and intention, I wrote about many of these ideas in my book, Purposely Positive: How to Live an Intentional and Inspired Life. My hope is that it serves as another small source of encouragement on your journey.

Take care of yourself—and take care of one another.
