The False Ceiling: Finding Strength and Resilience When Life Gets Hard

Do you know what this thing is?
Funny enough, it’s a “false ceiling” that came with a recent deodorant purchase.
Its job is pretty simple. It creates an extra layer of space and protection so that if the container gets crushed, the actual lid doesn’t get pushed down into the deodorant stick.
It’s a small, seemingly insignificant piece of plastic.
But it got me thinking…
How many “false ceilings” do we have in our own lives?
I’m not talking about physical protection.
I’m talking about the extra layers of support, strength, and resilience that help protect us when life starts to feel like it’s crushing us.
Maybe it’s your faith in God.
Maybe it’s your family or your circle of friends.
Maybe it’s the mental fortitude you’ve developed through years of experience—or simply the perspective that comes from realizing that you’ve made it through difficult times before.
Maybe it’s the ability to recognize that the problem itself isn’t what ultimately damages us—it’s how we choose to respond to it.
Or maybe it’s a combination of all of these things, along with many others.
We All Need Protection From Life’s Pressure
Life is going to put pressure on us.
Sometimes it's a major, crushing problem. Other times, it’s the accumulation of a hundred little things that slowly wears us down.
And sometimes, when we're in the middle of it, we forget that we have those protective layers around us.
We forget that we aren't facing everything with just the one layer that's taking the hit.
That's why I think it's important to recognize and appreciate those “false ceilings” before we need them.
Take some time during the good seasons of life to identify the people, beliefs, experiences, and perspectives that help you through the difficult ones.
Those are the things that build emotional resilience and give us the strength to keep moving forward when life gets difficult.
Remember Your Layers of Support
Maybe today is a good day to think about yours.
Who are the people you can lean on?
What gives you perspective when things aren't going your way?
What experiences have taught you that you are capable of getting through difficult circumstances?
And what beliefs give you strength when you need it most?
Because when life applies a little—or a lot—of pressure, those layers can make all the difference.
You may bend. You may get frustrated. You may even feel like you're being crushed.
But remember the layers of protection you have around you.
And just as our emotional well-being is influenced by the way we handle stress, our physical health can be affected by the pressures we experience in everyday life. Taking care of yourself means paying attention to both.
You are more resilient than you may realize.
Have a fantastic Tuesday!
